Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

There’s a tendancy to think that because the economy is still recovering from a recession that there’s a never-ending supply of people looking for jobs. Certainly, almost every week we read in the newspaper about people being made redundant. In my experience over the last year or so, the problem has not been the number of potential candidates but rather the quality. The right people with the right skills have not been available at the right time.

New Zealand has suffered from skills shortages for years. In fact, the problem is not confined to New Zealand; globally, there are skills in short supply and high demand. Earlier this month Manpower released the results of its global skills shortage survey. In it’s 5th year now, the survey found persistent talent shortages in many countries and industry sectors. Here’s their Top 10 list for New Zealand in 2010:
  1. Engineers
  2. Management/Executive
  3. Sales reps
  4. Skilled trades
  5. IT staff
  6. Technicians
  7. Labourers
  8. Sales manager
  9. Accounting and Finance staff
  10. Customer service reps

Larger companies often respond to the skills shortage by cultivating what’s known as “a pool of talent”. They invite registrations of interest from highly skilled people and build a long term relationship with them so that when a vacancy opens up they have a ready supply of pre-qualified candidates to draw from.

I’m the first to say what works for a large corporate does not necessarily work for a small, local business but in this instance I think there is an opportunity to adopt a similar approach. Social media such as twitter, facebook and linkedin and blogging make it easier than ever to connect with people and share information about your business/workplace. Most of these technologies can ‘speak’ to the other automatically so there’s no duplication of effort.

If you have a business profile on the social media sites, give it a go. Next time you have a vacancy, you might be surprised at the amount of time you’ll save in searching for candidates.
