Position Description - Your Organisation:Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Reporting to and partnering with the CEO, the chief technology officer (CTO) will set 'Your Organisation’s' technology policy and direction while also being an active participant in, and driver of, the organisation’s overall strategy. The CTO will be in charge of all company technology and technological resources and will be responsible for establishing 'Your Organisation's' technology vision, strategies, and plans for growth. The CTO will focus on maintaining and improving all technological systems and assets, including quality assurance.

Specific responsibilities include:

Chief Technology Officer - Your Organisation: Strategy

  • Develop the technological well-being of 'Your organisation' by providing technology projections and tech roadmaps, preparing growth plans, and directing staff.

  • Accomplish technology strategies by determining accountabilities; communicating and enforcing values, policies, and procedures; implementing recruitment, selection, orientation, training, coaching, counselling, disciplinary, and communication programs; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; and planning and reviewing compensation strategies.

  • Develop organisational technology strategies by contributing technological information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction, establishing functional objectives in line with organisational objectives.

  • Partner with the CEO on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations to the CEO based on technological analysis, risk analysis, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.

  • Develop strategic plans and set timelines for evaluation, development, and deployment of all technical, web, and mobile services.

  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with 'Your Organisation's' overall strategic plan.

  • Engage senior management and department heads to align technology management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections.

  • Ensure 'Your Organisations's' technological processes and service comply with all commercial agreements, laws, and regulations.

  • Study current and new industry trends, technologies, software development and information processing systems to evaluate the effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Represent 'Your Organisation' at conferences and networking events.

Chief Technology Officer - Your Organisation: Technological and Operational Management

  • Set 'Your Organisation's' technical vision and guide future technological development, including system design and changes in system architecture.

  • Define and ensure adherence to 'Your Organisation's' standards and best practices for systems, equipment, and software.

  • Establish software development processes and set objectives for the process, including supervision of quality assurance processes, integration, and system tests.

  • Maintain network security with IT team and supervise workflow of IT department.

  • Collaborate with the senior management team and other department heads where relevant to guide and advise on all technologies used across 'Your Organisation.'

  • Monitor web analytics and make recommendations that align with business goals, identifying opportunities for web and mobile services.

  • Oversee budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, so as to monitor progress and present technological metrics both internally and externally.

  • Track, analyse and monitor technology performance metrics and oversee the preparation and approval of all technology reporting materials and metrics for 'Your Organisation's' board of directors.

  • Evaluate and oversee all benefits negotiations, thus providing the most competitive packages for 'Your Organisation's' technology employees.

  • Review all formal IT-related procedures, processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward. 

Chief Technology Officer - Your Organisation: Team Management

  • Develop, manage and mentor direct staff, to cultivate an inclusive, compliant and highly-skilled tech team; guide larger multidisciplinary teams outside of IT when technology input is required.

  • Engage other members of the senior management team to facilitate cross-department collaboration which ensures that all financial, IT, and HR solutions positively support 'Your Organisation’s' evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.

  • Provide guidance on attracting and developing key IT team members for 'Your Organisation' to ensure technology standards and departmental budgets are met.

  • Represent the technological agenda in staff meetings and when making hiring decisions.

Chief Technology Officer - Your Organisation: Qualifications

The CTO will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least 10 years of broad technology experience, ideally with a work history that covers a range of IT disciplines including big data engineering, network architecture, web software development, security engineering and information security management. You will have experience managing technology for a mid-sized organisation in addition to gathering and evaluating technological information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership.

The CTO will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or related field.

  • Master’s degree in information technology or a technology-related discipline preferred.

  • Eight to ten years’ experience in a software development role, information technology role, or related field; five years in management or leadership role.

  • Experience with technology relative to industry; .Net, C#, SQL Server, MongoDB, Solr, jQuery, Angular, AWS, IIS, GitHub, Grunt/Gulp, Node.JS, Java/C.

  • Mature and proactive, with evidence of having worked as a true business partner to the Chief Executive of a similar sized organisation.

  • Demonstrated excellence in managing technology, compliance, and data security.

  • Skill in examining, developing, reengineering, and recommending technology policies and procedures.

  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.

  • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality. Needs to be seen as a team player who is committed to lifelong learning.

  • A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

  • An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills.

  • Strong commitment to developing team members.

  • Excellent time-management and project management skills.

  • Able to build strong interpersonal relationships with peers, brand leaders, and other senior management throughout the company.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the industry with a passion for 'Your Organisation’s' mission is essential.
