Position Description - Your Organisation: Database Administrator

Reporting to the CTO, the Database Administrator is responsible for building database systems of high availability, reliability and quality. You will also take responsibility for designing and implementing databases in accordance with end-user specifications, as well as defining users and enabling data distribution to the right user, in the right format, at the right time.

Specific responsibilities for the Database Administrator include:

  • Designing and implementing databases in accordance with end-users specifications.

  • Defining users and enabling data distribution to the right user, in the appropriate format, and in a timely manner.

  • Building database systems of high availability and quality depending on each end-user’s specialised role.

  • Minimising database downtime and managing parameters to provide fast query responses.

  • Maintaining server configuration, migration, and other implementations.

  • Providing proactive and reactive data management support and training to users.

  • Designing, documenting, and ensuring best practice database policies, procedures, and standards are followed.

  • Performing testing and evaluation on a regular basis to ensure data security, privacy, and integrity.

  • Troubleshooting and resolving database problems and ensuring audit trails are documented and maintained.

  • Creating custom monitoring and maintenance plans, implementing changes, and installing upgrades and new versions when required.

  • Managing storage and security for all applications, reporting and logging all incidents appropriately.

  • Managing back-ups and recovery procedures and monitoring root cause analysis and resolutions.

Database Administrator - Your Organisation: Qualifications

The Database Administrator will have a minimum of 3 years’ previous experience in a similar role. You will be a team player with a high level of attention to detail, the ability to think algorithmically, a passion for efficiency, an appetite for learning, and a commitment to teamwork. The Database Administrator will possess the following experience and attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or related field.

  • Minimum of three years SQL server database experience or database administration experience in a commercial environment (or equivalent work experience).

  • Demonstrable experience with the following:

    • Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or Teradata.

    • Microsoft Transact-SQL, PL/SQL, or Teradata SQL.

    • Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, Oracle OEM, or Teradata Studio.

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008/2012, UNIX, or AIX.

    • SQL Server Database Administration 2000/2005/2008 R2 and/or 2012.

  • Experience with database migration, performance tuning, optimisation, and setting up and managing database connections.

  • Familiar with SQL reporting services including creating, modifying, and managing custom reports.

  • Hands-on experience with database standards and end-user applications.

  • Excellent knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, integrity, and SQL.

  • Familiarity with database design, documentation, and coding.

  • Previous experience with DBA case tools (frontend/backend) and third-party tools.

  • Familiarity with programming languages and APIs.

  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and organisational skills.

  •  Accurate and precise attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think algorithmically.

  • Good interpersonal skills, with excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Up-to-date with the latest technology trends, techniques and technologies; able to articulate trends and potential clearly and confidently.
